Why a chatbot is a different risk from an ad

The two-minute check before you install

Ages 2–4

Still no unsupervised chatbot. - What leaves the device, and can I delete it? If the answer is not clearly stated, treat it as "everything, and no."

- What happens if the company disappears? An app whose content lives on the device keeps working. A cloud AI toy becomes a brick, and the recordings still exist somewhere.
What "no AI" looks like, and why it is a feature for this age
It helps to have a name for the alternative. Call it a deterministic app: it does the same thing every time. The pictures, sounds and levels were made by people and shipped inside the download. There is no chat box. Nothing is generated. It runs with the internet off. Two children playing it get the same game, and so does the same child tomorrow.
That sounds unambitious next to a talking companion, and for a 3 year old it is exactly right. What a young child gets out of a screen at this age is not conversation, they have you for that. It is the loop of look, decide, act, and see it work: the quiet attention that shows up in puzzle play, fine motor practice, and matching and sorting.
