Number Puzzle Game for Kids: 10 Types by Age, From Counting to Logic Grids

The best number puzzles for children contain no arithmetic at all. Ten types from age two to twelve, what the various games with boxes and numbers actually are, and how to tell a puzzle from a worksheet in a costume.

There is a useful rule for judging a number puzzle game for kids: the best ones involve almost no calculation.

That sounds backwards, so it is worth being precise about why. Sudoku contains no arithmetic whatsoever, you could play it with six colours or six animal faces and nothing would change. What it trains is deduction. Meanwhile an app that shows a child 7 + 5 = ? with a thirty-second timer and a cartoon frog is not a puzzle, it is a worksheet with production values.

Both have a place. But if you are looking for a number game that builds how a child thinks about quantity rather than how fast they recall a fact, you want the first kind. Here are ten types, roughly in age order.

1. Count and match quantity puzzles (ages 2–4)

Pair the numeral 4 with a card showing four apples. This is the foundational one, and the skill underneath it is one-to-one correspondence: touching each object exactly once while counting. Children who count "one, two, three" while pointing at the same object twice have not got it yet, and that is entirely normal at three.

Keep the range to one through five before extending to ten. Range matters far less than accuracy.

2. Number order and missing number lines (ages 3–5)

A short line of numbers with one blank. What goes here? This is where number order separates from counting, plenty of children can recite to twenty but cannot say what comes after fourteen without starting from one.

3. Number jigsaws and sequence strips (ages 3–5)

Puzzle pieces that only connect in the correct numerical order, so the picture is the answer key. Self-correcting in the same way a shape sorter is, which is exactly what suits this age.

4. Dot patterns and subitising games (ages 4–6)

Recognising five dots as five without counting them, the way you read a dice face instantly. Subitising is a genuinely important early-maths skill and one of the more reliable predictors of later number fluency. Dice, dominoes, and card games do this naturally.

5. Number bond and make-ten puzzles (ages 5–7)

Which two numbers make ten? Presented as a puzzle rather than a sum, this builds the flexible decomposition that mental arithmetic later depends on. The framing matters: "find the pairs that make ten" is a puzzle, "6 + ? = 10, you have twenty seconds" is a test.

6. Number boxes and place-value games (ages 6–9)

Roll a die, then choose which empty box to write the digit in, aiming to build the largest possible number. Once a digit is placed it cannot move. Simple, requires nothing but paper and a die, and it forces real reasoning about place value, a 6 goes in the hundreds column, a 1 goes somewhere you will not regret.

This is a staple classroom routine and one of the best number games that exists for the cost of nothing.

7. Magic squares and cross sums (ages 6–9)

Arrange numbers so every row and column sums to the same total. There is arithmetic here, but it is in service of a puzzle rather than the point of it, which is the right balance.

8. Kids Sudoku, 4×4 and 6×6 (ages 6–9)

Start with 4×4 grids using shapes or colours rather than digits, which makes it obvious that no arithmetic is involved. Move to 6×6 with numbers around seven, and 9×9 around nine. The skill being built is elimination: proving what a square cannot be. Many children find this far more satisfying than sums.

9. Sliding number puzzles (ages 7–10)

The 15 puzzle: numbered tiles in a 4×4 frame with one empty space, slide them into order. Genuinely difficult, requires planning several moves ahead, and teaches that some arrangements need you to undo progress temporarily in order to advance, a lesson that transfers well beyond puzzles.

10. Kakuro and number logic grids (ages 8–12)

Crossword-shaped grids where each run of squares must sum to a given clue with no repeated digits. Combines arithmetic with deduction and is a natural next step for a child who has exhausted Sudoku. See our guide for 8 year olds for the wider logic-puzzle progression.

Puzzle or worksheet? The test is whether the child could reach the answer by reasoning if you gave them unlimited time. A puzzle rewards thinking. A worksheet rewards knowing. Timers, streaks, and speed scoring are the reliable signs that you are looking at the second thing wearing the first thing's clothes.

"The game with boxes and numbers", which one do you mean?

This is a surprisingly common search, and it maps to at least four completely different games. If you half-remember one from childhood or from your child's classroom, it is probably on this list:

Sudoku, a 9×9 grid of boxes where you place digits so none repeats in any row, column, or 3×3 block. No arithmetic. Kid versions use 4×4 or 6×6 grids.

The 15 puzzle (sliding number puzzle), fifteen numbered tiles in a 4×4 frame with one gap, slid around until they are in order. The physical pocket version has been sold for well over a century.

Dots and Boxes, a two-player pencil game on a grid of dots. Players take turns drawing one line between adjacent dots, and whoever completes the fourth side of a box claims it and goes again. There is a well-known maths-classroom variant where each box contains a number, and completing it adds or subtracts that number from your score, which changes the strategy considerably.

Number Boxes, the classroom routine in item 6 above. Children draw a row of empty boxes, an adult calls out randomly generated digits one at a time, and each digit must be written into a box immediately and cannot be moved afterwards. The goal is usually the largest number, or the closest to a target.

All four are excellent, and three of them need nothing but paper.

Screen or paper?

Number puzzles are the category where paper holds up best. Dots and Boxes, Number Boxes, magic squares, and dice games all work perfectly with a pencil, cost nothing, and have the significant advantage of being played with someone rather than alone.

Digital versions win on supply and self-checking. An app can generate a fresh Sudoku at exactly the right difficulty forever, tell a child immediately whether a placement breaks a rule, and fit in a pocket on a long journey. For a child working alone, that instant feedback loop is genuinely valuable.

The practical answer for most families is paper games together at the table, and one good offline puzzle app on the phone for travel.

Choosing a number puzzle app without adverts

Number and counting games are heavily represented in the free, ad-funded corner of the app stores. Before installing:

Check the store listing for a "Contains ads" label and read the in-app purchase list. Both appear before you install.

Test in airplane mode. Download, open once, disconnect, play five minutes. Genuinely offline games carry on working. Ad-funded ones show blank slots, spinners, or refuse to load the next level.

Look for timers and streaks in the screenshots. Speed pressure on early maths is the fastest route to a child deciding they are bad at numbers, and it is very common in free apps because urgency drives session length.

For the youngest end: before numbers come quantities

If your child is two or three, formal number puzzles are still ahead of them. What comes first is matching, sorting, and placing, noticing that this goes with that, and getting an object precisely where it belongs.
